The Flores Islands

 18th October to 28th October 2010

After leaving Kupang, our first anchorage in the Flores was the Solor Islands at S8 25.400 E123 08.400. For the first time since Broome we could dive off the yacht into crystal clear water and not worry about crocodiles. We stayed there for four days, relaxing and enjoying the magnificent scenery.

I find it hard to understand why a country that is so poor would
leave perfectly good Life Rafts and Air Conditioning units of
these wrecked Ferries.

“Elevation” caught up and we joined them for one night at Labuan before heading for Maumere.

We anchored near Seaworld S8 38.02 E122 18.60
resort and enjoyed the facilities of the western side of the anchorage.

They had an Internet room, restaurant and a beach bar.
One evening we had a nice meal on the beach.

Jacobus is your Man for fuel, laundry and almost
anything else around Maumere. +6281338776172
He is very honest and his son just loves sweats!

Sundowners and dinner on the beach are a must.
While anchored at Maumere we took a Bimo to Keli Mutu and climbed to the rim of the 1600ft extinct volcano, it was beautiful.

Bargaining is acceptable and can be great fun

On our way back we stopped at the Maumere markets and bought a few vegetables, eggs and a USB device for Internet.

Catch of the day, express delivery

Next we sailed to a bay/ village called Nagaruong in the Flores Isles. S8 30.0 E121 42.8 about an eight hour sail. Around the halfway mark (230nm), I was just nodding off when the fishing rod went off with a scream. Cathy raced to lock off the clutch, just in time to see a massive fish jump in the air and shake itself loose. A few minutes later the same thing, this time I looked out the cabin port in time to see it do the same thing again. Later I pulled the line in to find that the wire trace was bitten through. Whatever it was we didn't want onboard anyway, far to big and aggressive.

We then anchored in Rangkoh for a couple of nights before heading across to the Komodo Islands.

After watching this Guy for a while, I recon he could teach me
a thing or two about sailing........ Generations of knowledge.
