Kupang

26th October 2010
We only stayed in kupang two nights, just long enough to get our clearance into Indonesia, top up with fuel and try (what was known as) Teddy's Bar.

Mr Napa was looking after all the immigration paperwork for us and soon after 0900 we called him up on the VHF. He replied (in broken English) and gave us instruction to meet him on the beach near the big building with the red roof. We diligently did as requested and were met by a man on the beach. He asked us for all our ships papers and passports. As Cathy was pulling all the documents out of our waterproof bag, she stopped. You are My Napa, aren’t you? He nodded and smiled “yes that is me”. We have learnt that more often than not the Indonesian’s and Malaysian’s will never offer their name, even when we introduce our selves first.

We discovered that there is a cheaper and safer way to get fuel than to use Mr Napa. The Boys that hang around near “Teddy’s Bar” will deliver the fuel in drums to your yacht for less than we paid and we had to battle the surf picking it up from the beach ourselves. We learnt early on, it pays to ask around and haggle hard. Sometimes this is not easy, when you can see how little they have and how poor they are.

There was more to see in kupang, but the rolling swell was very uncomfortable and we wanted to get away ahead of the Blue Water Rally Boats. The Blue Water Rally (the current 2009-20011 Blue Water Rally consisted of about 40 yachts and left Gibraltar at the end of October 2009)  are also leaving Kupang as soon as there immigration, customs and quarantine clearance is complete. Mr Napa was very efficient with this for us, we had none of the problems that the Blue Water Rally yachts had.
Our Bali Agent ("Charlie - Indo Nautical" <info@indonautical.net>) and Customs Agent in ("napa rachman" <kupangyacht_service@yahoo.com>) Kupang,
Our plan was to leave Darwin a couple of days before the fleet so we could stay in front of  them all through Indonesia, but be within radio contact for our own safety. This worked well, but staying in front of 2009 Oyster 55’s and the like will not be easy. Some yachts look like they would use molten gold for fuel if needed. Many were English, but there were also a few from Spain, Sweden, USA and Canada. http://www.yachtrallies.co.uk/index.php/blue-water-rally/roll-call.html

From Kupang we intend to head for the Flores/ Solor Islands. This is at S8 25.400 E123 08.400.
