24th - 26th August
Anchored in Freshwater Bay, in Vansittart Bay S 14 00. 358 E 126, 10. 509. Yesterday we set sail from Krait Bay and had a beautiful sail for nine hours, arriving as the sun was getting low. At midday we were doing 10kts with the currents and 11kt wind on the nose, later on we were still making 6kts with just the mainsail and 2kts of wind behind us. At lunchtime a large pod of Pilot whales entertained us for a good ten minutes, the water is like Gin and the fish are bighting. Just another beautiful day in The Kimberley!!!!
Paspaley Pearls have a huge pearl lease here, their flagship Rosylynne is here with their ship Clare and many workboats. Just an hour ago one of their seaplanes landed with supplies and probably took some of the pearls.
It's been 30+ degrees for the last 14 days, all we need to ware is our bathers. We found clear enough water to have a quick dip the other day while on Biggie Island, risky business around here. This morning we set off at 0600, in the dinghy hunting for Black Lipped oysters. We filled the bucket in no time at all, Kilpatrick and oyster shooters for the sundowner later, yum!!!!
There is a freshwater pool about ten minutes away
and we are about to go for a dip and wash our hair.
We are told that the resident “Handbag” is very docile
and only swims in the lower pool. The upper pool is
quite safe, so we are told.
For the last three days we have been anchored in Freshwater Bay, in Vansittart Bay S 14 00. 358 E 126, 10. 509. The fish are very obliging here and the oysters are massive. We have had oysters Mexican, oysters Kilpatrick and lots of oyster shooters.
The freshwater pool here is beautiful, and there has been no sign of the resident “Handbag”.
